Since 1950 one day after the procession of the landlords the procession of the “Tracht”—groups and the marksmen is held. The origin of this procession was the silver wedding of King Ludwig I. and his wife Queen Therese of Bavaria, once known as Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The name of the place where Oktoberfest is celebrated every year is “Theresienwiese”. The name stems from the wedding of the two aristocrats in 1810. Because of this wedding the Oktoberfest took place the first time. In honor of the princess at that time the field of the celebration was named “Theresienwiese”.
The participants of the procession aren’t only Germans, but also from different European countries. E.g. groups from Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Italy, and Croatia are part of the procession. At the head of the procession is the so called “Münchner Kindl”, the symbol of Munich, followed by the mayor of Munich, the municipal council of Munich, and the Minister President of Bavaria.
