Another landmark of Munich is the oldest mentioned parish church Saint Peter whose tower is named Old Peter in the vernacular lore and probably it is the origin of Munich. St. Peter is probably the most popular Church in Munich sung in song and shrouded in legend.

The church contains important works like the Gothic-styled Schrenk-altar from 1400, the baroque baptistery of Krumper and the Rococo side altars from Ignaz Günther.

After the accomplishment of the 306 steps the panoramic view from its tower during good weather is very worthwhile because you could see to the Alps if its foehn-air.

The last big construction phase with its renovation and rebuilding after the destruction in World War II was finalized in 1975.

A roman vault was found during excavations 1958. It must have already stood there in the place of Old Peter at the time of the formation of the town in 1158. The contemporary church was constructed for building on it for centuries. The Rococo rebuilding in the 18th century gave distinction to the interior, the outskirt area can be traced back to the Renaissance in the 14th century.

St. Peter was largely destroyed in 1944/45. Then a reconstruction seemed to be impossible because of financial prospects and the church should have been pulled down. Michael Cardinal Faulhaber rescued the church at the initiative of two parish priests and started the reconstruction in 1946 which was finished after the renovation and the rebuilt in 1975. The reconstruction of the interior, especially the last ceiling frescos, lasted until 2000.
