Tips Munich
St. Michael
The catholic Jesuit church St. Michael in Munich’s downtown – ordered by Duke Wilhelm V. – is consecrated to the archangel Michael and is considered as the most tremendous creation of the Renaissance this side of the Alps.
It became an example for many German Baroque churches. The tunnel vault with its span of 20 metres is only 6 metres smaller than that in St. Peter in Rom. Very impressive is the big façade illustration of the victory of Archangel Michael against the devil.
The church was badly damaged in November 1944 and the tunnel vault collapsed. The reconstruction took place between 1946 and 1948 and the tunnel vault was newly bricked.
The facade renovation started at the beginning of the 70th. At the beginning of the 80th the stucco ornamentation was reinstalled.
The Michaels church and its facade give distinction to the Munich pedestrian area in a new splendour today.
