National Museum of Egyptian Art
The National Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich – a collection of fascinating art works from the land of pyramids – can be traced back to the collections of duke Albrecht V and shows a world wide unique inventory of Egyptian sculptures.
At the moment it is placed in the Residence, but the removal to the area of art in Munich is already planed. In addition to the collections in Berlin and Hildesheim it is the most important one in Germany.
The collection contains exhibits from all eras of the old Egypt to the Christian time as well as exhibits from neighbouring cultures like Nubia, Assyria and Babylon. Chosen objects, sculptures, adornments, cultic subjects and papyrus convey an outstanding overview about the art and culture, belief in the hereafter and the religion in old Egypt.
The only antique freestanding obelisk of Germany (Obelisk of Titus Sextius Africanus) is standing at the entrance of the museum next to the ball room building of the Residence. It has a height of 5.8 metres and its centre section originates in the year 50. The obelisk is getting restored in the anteroom of the museum at the moment. Because of protective reasons it will be placed in the new building of the museum later.
