The Marienplatz is the lively central point of Munich since the foundation of the town. The most important public events took place here for centuries. For example proclamations, executions, later demonstrations of all kinds. The legendary Christkindlmarkt takes place here during the advent season as well.
The Marienplatz is dominated by the new city hall. Cohorts of sightseer gather at noon in front of the city hall to watch the Schäfflertanz and the carillon.
The Fischbrunnen as well as the Mariensäule that was build because of a promise made by elcetor Maximilian during the Thirty Years War 1638 are also notable.
