
The history of the Residence, which was the domicile of the Wittelsbacher till 1918, starts 1385 with the construction of the Neufeste. The refuge, formerly encircled by a moat, was rebuild, attached and new built for 5 centuries.
The Antiquarium –built between 1568 and 1571 and the oldest lasted hall of the Residence – is the biggest Renaissance ball room north of the Alps. In the interior of the grot-courtyard, an artificial with crystals and seashells graced gold plated statue of Merkur, was created.
The emperor court was finished in the 17th century; after numerous alterations the complex was finalized with a Kings Building and a festival room in the 19th century. The treasure chamber with numerous objects of art is in the Kings Building.
Stylistic devices of the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Rococo and the Classicism are mixed up to an outstanding complex of buildings that counts to one of the most awesome castle grounds in Europe.
