Elector Ferdinand Maria donated this spacious baroque styled summer castle his wife Adelaide after the birth of the heir apparent Maximilian Emanuel in 1664 by whom it was finally realised. Driven by the ambitious elector his mothers land villa was enlarged to a spacious castle complex by French and Flemish court architects with symmetric expansions. It reached a width of 600 metres and found a formal equivalence in the palace garden complex.

A series of considerable collections are in the castle. The artful interior and the much-admired beauty-related gallery of King Ludwig I made the castle to one of the most popular sightseeing features of Munich. In the museum of the castle the birth-room of King Ludwig II as well as the multi-storey ball room with its wonderful ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmerman is found.

The cubic central block with the perron by Barelli and Zuccalli (1664 to 1674) is the origin of the complex. The galleries (1704) are followed by the four diagonally placed pavilions (1715), the royal stud and the orangery and then the monasteries in the north. A circular flower bed with five Kavaliersbauten on both sides aroused between 1729 and 1758.

The royal stud museum with its collection of porcelain, the Museum human and nature and the nearby botanic garden are also interesting for visitors.
