The architect Friedrich von Gärtner accepted the bid to plan this building in 1839. The Arch of Konstantin in Rom was the antetype. The Bavarian army, which was decisively involved in the victory against Napoleon, is dignified therewith. The arch shows different reliefs with fighting-scenes, Medallions and the personalized Bavarian provinces. Victory-figures are situated on the columns. The chariot of Bavaria on the top of the arch is pulled by four lions.
The inscription “Dem Sieg geweiht, vom Krieg zerstört, zum Frieden mahnend” (Dedicated to the victory, destroyed by war, to remind the peace) was placed there after World War II.
