The world-famous castle Neuschwanstein was commissioned from Ludwig II. and built from 1868 to 1892. Ludwig II. was inspired from the Thuringian Wartburg he visited once.
Christian Jank, who designed theatres, planned the castle, and was displaced by the architect Georg von Dollmann in 1874. Architecture and interior reflect the romantic historism and Eklekticism of the 19th century.
The castle was built from bricks. Merely the outer parts are encased with different kinds of rocks. Unfortunately most plans could not be implemented due to lack of time and money, for example the keep with the chapel or the castle’s garden with terraces and fountains below the throne room.
In the year of the king’s death, 1886, the magnificent buildings was not finished but already open for visitors. Today more than one billion people come to have a look at this extraordinary fairy castle.
