The famous castle which looks like coming right out of a fairy-tale is situated in the Graswangtal next to Oberammergau. It was built between 1874 and 1878 during the reign of King Ludwig II. The castle was built on the place of his father’, Max II, so called “Königshäuschen” (King’s-House).
Ludwig II tried to realize his ideas with the architect Georg von Dollmann. Seven excessive plans were needed to satisfy the king, who had a big affectation to the bourbonian France and the Sun King, Louis XIV. The interior was pompous and oriented on the French baroque style. Worth mentioning is the whishing-table. The table in the dining-room could be lowered mechanically to the kitchen to be re-prepared by the employees.
Ludwig II also implemented a garden in exact geometrical forms. It includes a basin with a fountain reaching 22 metres in height, terraces with the small temple for Venus, Neptune’s Fountain with cascades, the Mauritanian Kiosk, the Maroccanian House, the Venus-Grotto, the Hunding-Cottage, the Pavilon for Musicians and the Hermitage of Gurnemanz.
