The Herreninsel is the biggest of the three islands in the Chiemsee. Thanks to King Ludwig II. it is one of the greatest attractions in Bavaria. The construction of the castle started in 1878 according to the plans of Georg Dollmann.
The castle Herrenchiemsee should have become a bavarian Versailles to emblematize the absolutism. However the king wanted this castle to be built for him and not for the public. Only 20 of the planned 70 rooms were completed, but these are designed in a glorious fashion. Especially worth mentioning is the mirror-gallery, the parade-room and the diningroom with a mechanically driven whishing table.
The park was constructed in Baroque style with many fountains after the pland from Carl von Effner.
Today the castle is used as a muesum, dedicated to King Ludwig II. widmet. Paintings, busts and historic photographs and souvenirs such as his christening robe and the cloak of coronation.
